Often referred to as a hidden gem in the Conejo Valley, NABU Wines has been an urban winery producing its handcrafted award-winning wines since 2012.

Why NABU, we ask?“When my wife Janet Barnett and I started the winery, our main focus was producing wines from Napa Valley and from our local mountains of Malibu, and that’s why we are called NABU,” says Owner Greg Barnett. Any “Star Wars” reference? “No,” he laughs, adding, “but we do have fun with our name on May the 4th, Star Wars Day, at the winery every year; people arrive in costume with light sabers and more. It’s a lot of fun.”

When you visit NABU’s winery, you have no idea what to expect, and when you step inside, you realize you have arrived at a destination. While NABU Wines still produces wine in the Napa Valley and the Malibu Coast, its focus has expanded to neighboring AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) in Northern California, including Mendocino County, where they produce Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon on the Talmage Bench in Ukiah, as well as Pinot Noir on the southern part of the Sonoma Coast.

“In 2023, I began producing white wines in Paso Robles again with Sauvignon Blanc and Albariño. Both have been well received by our guests and at competitions at fairs,” says Greg. “So far, both have won two gold medals each and one silver medal each. We also have four barrels of Petit Verdot almost ready to bottle. I am very excited to share this with everyone.”

This year, NABU achieved outstanding results at the county fairs in Orange County and Los Angeles and at the mid-state fair in Paso Robles, earning a total of 15 gold, silver, and bronze medals. At press time, they were still awaiting the results from the local Ventura County Fair.

NABU Wines is the only winery in the Conejo Valley that is open every day at noon for wine tasting. The wine flight features three white wines and three red wines, curated by their staff, who take great pleasure in sharing stories about each one with their guests.

When you look around the winery, you notice that it’s very music-centric, with vintage gear displayed, and they have an extensive vinyl collection featuring jazz, rock, heavy metal, current releases and other genres, spanning decades, available to choose from to spin on their turntable. You can also bring in one of your favorites to spin, too.

NABU Wines is located at 2649 Townsgate Road, Suite 200, in Westlake Village. For more information, call 805.778.1100 or visit NabuWines.com.

Years ago, when you started collecting wine, the idea of having a wine cellar in your home began with finding a space where you could fit wine racks and keep it cool. Fast forward, and they are now what Cellar Masters calls wine features in your living space or business. This means you can not only enjoy your wine collection in your dining room, living room, or unique space, but also watch your collection grow. Okay, and maybe brag about it to friends or customers too!

Cellar Masters was founded in 1990 for that very reason—to sit down with clients, listen to their needs, and design a climate-controlled wine storage experience for them to enjoy every day.

“I have assembled an incredible experienced team at Cellar Masters to design, build, and install cellars and wine storage for your home or for your business,” says Cellar Masters Owner Scott Berry, who has installed more than 2,500 custom wine cellars throughout the region.

As avid wine collectors and restaurateurs have experienced with Cellar Masters, the team applies their knowledge and experience to create wine features tailored to each client’s specific needs.

“Call it our obsession…we love visiting a new home or business, listening, designing, and creating their custom wine cellars every step of the way,” says Scott. “We understand our client’s tastes are unique for each project, so their wine cellar is personalized to suit their needs. You dream it, and Cellar Masters will create it!”

Serving both residential and commercial clients, Cellar Masters’ team of design experts and installation professionals works in concert to build custom wine cellars of all shapes and sizes to protect your wine collection and enhance your home or business. From the elegant beauty of a traditional wine cellar to contemporary wine walls, Cellar Masters excels at customizing wine features to fit any space.

Owner Scott Berry of Cellar Masters with the Wine feature they built for Old Oaks Steakhouse in Thousand Oaks

“I am always pleased when discussing a new cellar with a new client and see how excited they get when they realize they do have enough space to create one, whether in an unused space under a staircase, in an unused room or on a wall,” says Scott.

A recent project involved converting an unused basement space in a historic 1894 home in Santa Barbara. This climate-controlled wine cellar, crafted from alder with exposed concrete beams, walls, and floors, has become a home for the owners’ 740-bottle wine collection, featuring a central tasting table where guests can congregate to enjoy their wine. The locking, black anodized sliding doors, with their three glass panes, offer an amazing way to view the collection. “We loved how this wine feature turned out!” shares Scott.

Protect Your Wine Collection

Whether you are a winemaker, collector, or restaurateur, wine storage for your collection is always a concern. Keeping your wines at the perfect temperature and, of course, easy access to them is of utmost importance. Cellar Masters offers a variety of climate-controlled storage options, ranging from 12 to 250 cases per locker, including custom wine lockers and a concierge service to receive wine club deliveries.

On a gorgeous afternoon, you stroll through a stunning vineyard surrounded by mountains and vast blue sky as far as the eye can see. Afterward, you relax at a lovely table set among the vines, savoring a flight of luscious, velvety red wines. You’ve just experienced the unexpected magic of Mizel Estate Wines, nestled in the heart of Thousand Oaks’ Hidden Valley, just 25 miles north of Los Angeles.

Estate-Grown Perfection

The name “Mizel” is a blend of the names of the owners, Michael and Zelene Fowler, who established the vineyard in 2014 with the goal of creating world-class wines.

Mizel Estate Wines are grown on their 38-acre estate in the Malibu Coast AVA (American Viticultural Area). The geography of Mizel Estate, located on a fertile valley floor protected by mountains, provides ideal growing conditions for exceptional fruit.

When you taste Mizel’s fine wines, you drink in the pure expression of their vineyard.

“The real secret to Mizel’s superb red wines is the ground they come from,” says Mizel’s Winemaker, Guillaume Fabre. “The soil brings the tannin structure and creates a certain elegance that is so difficult to find—and impossible to add.”

Handcrafted Elegance

Mizel Estate Wines is a boutique, limited-production winemaker, focused on quality. Sustainably grown and hand-harvested, only the choicest grapes are used for Mizel Wines.

“Mizel’s dedicated team has control over the entire winemaking process, which allows us to consistently produce excellent wines,” says Michael Fowler.

Mizel grows six French grape varieties on their estate that are well suited to their terroir: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah. Throughout the growing season, the vines are nurtured under the direction of Estate Manager Hector Ambriz and Winemaker Fabre, who bring forth the premium characteristics of each individual block of Mizel’s extraordinary fruit. As harvest approaches, the grapes are carefully monitored to ensure that each variety is harvested at its peak.

The winemaking commences in Paso Robles, with Fabre managing crush and fermentation, bringing forth each grape variety’s unique flavor profile. Afterward, each varietal is aged in superlative French oak for 18 months.

“There is a little bit of an art and science to figuring out which types of oak and how old the barrels should be for each varietal. Guillaume is the expert, and he knows best,” says Fowler.

When the aging is complete, the Fowlers meet with Fabre to taste wine from over 30 different barrels to decide which ones to blend. This passionate winemaking team combines their expertise and perspectives to skillfully blend Mizel Estate’s signature wines: First Impression Bordeaux Blend, Easy to Please Grenache and Smooth Touch Syrah. Each vintage is meticulously blended based on the characteristics of the fruit from the year’s harvest.

The results of the Mizel team’s efforts shine through in their opulent red wines. Mizel’s nuanced, elegant red wines dazzle the palate with lingering flavors of fruit and spice.

Every dancer has a unique story to tell through movement at Cuizon Ballet Centre, where the founder’s philosophy emphasizes the importance of technique, artistry, and personal growth in every student.

“We specialize in Balanchine technique—a method not easily found elsewhere,” says Founder and Teacher Lisa Cuizon.

The Balanchine technique revolutionized ballet with its trademark blend of speed, athleticism, and precise musicality. Developed by legendary Choreographer George Balanchine, this approach pushes dancers to move with intense velocity and cover expansive space in minimal time, often employing very deep pliés and extreme extensions.

Key elements include a uniquely open and dynamic port de bras, iconic arabesques with open hips angled toward the audience—giving the illusion of higher leg lines—and distinctive, sometimes dramatic, hand and wrist placements known as “Balanchine Arms.”

The head placement is equally striking, with dancers spiraling from the waist up and presenting their cheekbones as if “asking for a kiss,” creating a three-dimensional elegance that connects them directly to the audience. Balanchine’s method demands both extraordinary strength and flexibility, resulting in performances that are daringly athletic and effortlessly fluid—altering the landscape of American ballet and contemporary dance.

Lisa began her training in a Balanchine-based school in the 1960s, continued at The School of American Ballet at age 15, and was later mentored by Melissa Hayden, a prima ballerina assoluta of New York City Ballet under Balanchine himself. Lisa’s knowledge and firsthand experience provide students with a rare and authentic lineage of training.

Serving ages 7 through adult, Cuizon Ballet Centre’s class sizes allow for highly individualized instruction alongside comprehensive class work.

“We recognize that every body is unique, and we tailor our training to support each dancer’s specific needs,” says Lisa, adding that students receive more than just technical instruction.

They are mentored by Lisa, who guides them in both their dance and academic journeys.

“Our classes are especially sought after for their unique structure rooted in Balanchine technique,” says Lisa, adding that each class begins with Pilates to prepare the body for the demands of ballet, strengthen the core, and reduce the risk of injury.

“We also offer Floor Barre, based on the work of Zena Rommett, and a dedicated stretch class to help balance and support the body’s muscular requirements in ballet,” she says.

Flashback to 2001, when Cuizon Ballet Centre was born from Lisa’s desire to pass on her knowledge in its purest form. A group of supportive parents—who witnessed the positive impact of Lisa’s teaching on their children’s bodies, minds and spirits—came together to help fund the school’s opening.

“That moment of belief and collaboration remains a source of inspiration—even 24 years later,” Lisa says.

Lisa also felt compelled to give back. Having had the opportunity to pursue her own dream as a dancer, she was inspired to help other young dancers do the same.

Above all, “our goal is to help every student reach their personal best—whether that means becoming a strong recreational dancer, pursuing higher education with a focus on dance, or stepping directly into the professional dance world,” Lisa adds. “We guide each dancer toward the path that’s right for them.”

Cuizon Ballet Centre is located at 2977 Willow Lane, Suite 200, in Thousand Oaks. For more information, call 805.494.8800 or visit CuizonBalletCentre.com.

As the owners of The Sofa Guy, Paul and Holly Trent provide a long-lasting, extraordinary experience for clients in a warm, friendly and knowledgeable environment.

“What makes us unique is our attention to our clients’ comfort and design needs,” says Paul, whose business has been established for more than 2 decades.

“It’s not one size fits all,” Paul emphasizes.

“We spend a lot of time in our showroom helping our clients find their unique comfort. It may be back pitch, firmness or softness, seat depth or seat height. Our showroom has many different styles and variety of cushions that we use as tools, moving them from frame to frame if necessary. Once we have their unique comfort, configuring pieces in the space is easy.”

Paul and Holly started the family-owned business with custom sofas and have evolved into a local interior design team that helps clients furnish their entire home—or homes, in some cases.

Located at 2520 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., “our space is filled with beautiful pieces from all our vendors, as well as our own custom upholstery,” he says. In this space, “we are passionate about serving, helping and solving problems. We have been doing it for 20 years with upholstery, so why not do it with all aspects of the home?”

One of the most popular services they offer is the old-fashioned house call. This service guarantees that any piece they make will actually fit the space.

“It gives us and our clients peace of mind knowing that the configuration they order will fit perfectly into their home,” Paul explains. “Often our clients need help with their complete rooms or their entire home, and we have all the amazing design resources to fulfill their needs.”

Origin Story

Flashback to 1996, when the Trent couple opened their first furniture store with a business partner in Venice Beach called Philip Paul Designs. From the original store in Venice Beach, they changed their name to Welcome Home Interiors.

“When we described what we do, people would say, ‘Oh the Sofa Guy! My neighbor just bought a sectional from you guys…or something similar,” Paul recalls. “We got that so often we finally gave in. We figured it’s simple, memorable and a little goofy. We embraced the moniker and today we are The Sofa Guy Inc.”

The Trent couple moved their business to Thousand Oaks in 2003.

“I actually started out of my garage,” Paul remembers. “I would go to clients’ homes with fabrics and pictures, have my guys build the pieces, and then personally delivered them in my pick-up truck.”

They have since moved the business out of the house and into the Westlake Design Center, and in 2013, they made their big move to Thousand Oaks Boulevard.

“We hope to be able to add more stores in the future and continue to serve the Conejo Valley,” Paul says.

Placing their client’s needs first, they consistently strive to deliver exceptional customer service and furnishings of the highest quality.

“It’s really not about the sale; I mean yes, we need sales to survive, but really, we want the experience to be a joyful process without any pressure,” Paul adds. “Our showroom is set up to feel relaxed and comfortable; our staff often welcomes you with ‘make yourself at home’…hopefully, bringing just a little peace to this over-anxious world of ours.”

California Dance Theatre

With over 30 teachers on staff, CDT offers dance classes to students of all ages and levels — from children to adults, beginners to professionals — in ballet, lyrical, contemporary, modern, tap, musical theatre, jazz, acro, and hip-hop.

2282 Townsgate Road, Suites 4, 5, 6, Westlake Village, CA 91361
Tel: (805) 906-2087 |  caldancetheatre.com

California Dance Theatre, in the heart of Westlake Village, proudly celebrates its 40th season of inspiring dancers across the greater Conejo Valley. Since opening its doors in 1985, the studio has remained a cornerstone of the local arts community—an enduring space where creativity, discipline and joy come to life through movement.

Founded by Joyce Hurley, her daughter Kim Maselli and fellow dance artist Lori Sorensen, California Dance Theatre was born from a shared vision: to cultivate excellence in dance while nurturing the individual. Drawing on their collective experience as professional performers and educators, the three women set out to create more than a dance school—they envisioned a second home for young dancers, a vibrant space where talent and character could flourish in equal measure.

From the beginning, California Dance Theatre (CDT) quickly gained recognition for its outstanding faculty and world-class instruction. Offering training in an impressive range of styles—from classical ballet and jazz to hip hop, tap, acro, contemporary and even aerial arts— the studio welcomes students of all ages and skill levels, from recreational beginners to aspiring professionals. Over 4 decades, CDT has served thousands of dancers, some of whom have gone on to careers in professional dance companies, Broadway, film, television and major universities.

At its core, CDT remains a family-run business, and that familial spirit runs deep. The studio’s roster of teachers includes longtime faculty members—many of whom have taught at CDT for over 20 years—as well as generations of dancers returning as instructors. It’s not uncommon to find mother-daughter pairs, siblings or even twins on staff. This intergenerational connection reinforces the deep sense of belonging that defines the studio culture.

“I love that our studio still has a feeling of family after so many years,” shares Artistic Director Kim Maselli. “Some of our teachers have been with us for decades. We all share a genuine love for dance and for the young artists we serve. It’s especially touching to see former students come back with their own children—continuing the legacy of dance through a new generation.”

A defining feature of CDT’s curriculum is its implementation of the American Ballet Theatre® National Training Curriculum, a comprehensive, six-level program designed to promote both technical excellence and dancer health. This approach ensures that students receive strong foundational training while learning to respect their bodies and develop longevity in the art form. Dancers in the upper levels have the opportunity to audition and perform with Pacific Festival Ballet (PFB), CDT’s affiliated nonprofit resident company at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center. Productions like “The Nutcracker” and “Cinderella” have become annual community traditions, giving young dancers the extraordinary chance to share the stage with international ballet stars.

While ballet is a strong foundation at CDT, the studio is equally committed to a wide variety of dance styles. From tap and lyrical to acro and musical theatre, students are encouraged to explore all avenues of movement. More than just a training ground, CDT is a performance hub, with opportunities including seasonal recitals, outreach performances and community events that help students gain confidence and stage presence while building lasting friendships.

As CDT reflects on its 40-year journey, it does so with gratitude and excitement for the future. In celebration of this milestone, the studio invites community members of all ages—from 3 to 73— to experience the joy of dance through a free trial class. Whether you’re stepping into the studio for the first time or returning after many years away, CDT welcomes you with open arms.
