“Everybody can do something,” Montecito Bank & Trust founding member and Chairman Michael Towbes became famous for saying. While he spoke these words to encourage his colleagues to use their time, treasure or talent to help organizations they are passionate about, Towbes also modeled this sentiment throughout his life.

From serving his country in the Navy during the Korean War, to volunteering and chairing numerous nonprofit boards and granting more than $25 million to more than 400 organizations on the Central Coast through his Towbes Foundation, Towbes’ desire to help others led him to create a lasting legacy that continues to this day, almost 10 years after his passing in April 2017.

Towbes’ spirit of service was embedded into the culture of Montecito Bank & Trust from the beginning, back in 1975 when he cofounded the bank, originally named Bank of Montecito. Elected as CEO in 1982, Towbes became the sole shareholder in 1983 and eventually served as Chairman from the 1990s until 2017.

During his tenure, he established impactful programs, including Community Dividends and Anniversary Grants, donating millions of dollars to help local nonprofits in their invaluable work supporting those in need and strengthening communities.

“Giving back has always been part of who we are at MB&T. Michael Towbes founded the bank with a vision to make the communities we serve better places to live and work, and more than 50 years later, that still guides us,” said Chairman and CEO Janet Garufis. “We believe being a community bank means investing in the people and organizations doing the important work to help our communities grow and thrive.”

Towbes wanted MB&T associates to have the opportunity to support the organizations that mattered most to them. In 1990, he began the annual tradition of celebrating the bank’s anniversary by encouraging associates to nominate and select 10 nonprofits to receive Anniversary Grants in support of their missions. Since its inception, the program has provided more than $700,000 to over 180 unique nonprofits.

In 2003, Towbes invited 100 local nonprofits to join him for lunch on the Monday before Thanksgiving. He surprised each with a check, totaling $1 million, and announced the launch of MB&T’s Community Dividends program. Today, the annual celebration brings together local nonprofits and provides more than $1 million each year in support to community organizations focused on enriching Arts & Culture, Health & Medical, Social Services, and Youth & Education. As of November 2026, the program has provided more than $25 million to over 500 nonprofits throughout Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

After Towbes’ passing in 2017, the bank added the Michael Towbes Community Impact Dividend to the annual Community Dividends celebration in his honor, providing significant additional funding to organizations delivering critical and sustainable services to some of our community’s most vulnerable residents. Since its inception in 2019, the Community Impact Dividend has awarded $1.325 million to 18 organizations, including last year’s recipients, the Santa Barbara Foundation and Ventura County Community Foundation.

Beyond these giving programs, the bank supports hundreds of community and business events through sponsorships, matches associates’ and directors’ charitable giving and recognizes their volunteer service with additional donations to the organization of their choice.

Carrying on the legacy of Towbes, MB&T’s associates give back to their communities year after year. Last year, they volunteered over 7,900 hours, with 43 associates serving on nonprofit boards and reaching over 2,250 students through their financial literacy programs. Partnering with schools and nonprofits through programs like REACH, PEAC and Fun in the Sun, MB&T’s associates educate community youth about finances, empowering them with essential tools to build successful financial futures.

“We know we can do more together,” said Garufis. “No single organization can meet every need, but we all have something to contribute. For us, that might be funding, expertise, relationships or simply showing up when we’re needed. When we bring those strengths together, we can make a much greater impact.”

Towbes’ vision to create a community bank dedicated to giving back continues to serve hundreds of nonprofits from Santa Maria to Westlake Village. The seeds he planted more than 50 years ago have bloomed into a mighty force for good in the world.

Towbes’ enduring commitment to improving and uplifting the lives of so many lives on through MB&T’s support of nonprofits focusing on Arts and Culture, Youth and Education, Social Services, and Health and Medical Services. Local nonprofits can apply for Community Dividends, and 188 nonprofits received support last year through just that one program.

As communities’ needs change, MB&T will continue to develop solutions and resources to address essential issues including affordable housing, mental wellness and food access, while sharing expertise and educating communities about financial education, fraud prevention and cybersecurity.

Guided by their founder’s example to provide innovative, lifechanging programs, MB&T’s associates stand strong in their efforts to make the communities they serve better places to live and work.

On a gorgeous fall afternoon, you stroll through a stunning vineyard surrounded by mountains and vast blue sky as far as the eye can see. Afterward, relaxing at a lovely table set among the vines, you savor a flight of luscious, velvety red wines. You’ve just experienced the unexpected magic of Mizel Estate Wines, nestled in the heart of Thousand Oaks’ Hidden Valley, just 25 miles north of Los Angeles.

Perfect Provenance

The name “Mizel” is a blend of the names of the owners, Michael and Zelene Fowler, who established the vineyard in 2014 with the goal of creating world-class wines.

Mizel Estate Wines are grown on a 38-acre estate in the Malibu Coast AVA (American Viticultural Area). The geography of Mizel Estate, located on a fertile valley floor protected by mountains, provides ideal growing conditions for exceptional fruit. The grapes bask in the valley’s warmth, yet are cooled by ocean breezes, which allows them to retain their acidity.

When you taste Mizel’s fine wines, you drink in the pure expression of their vineyard. Mizel’s Winemaker, Guillaume Fabre, says “creating great wine is a question of balance; that unique equation that enables an ideal blend of climate, soil and the grape itself.”

Handcrafted Elegance

Mizel Estate Wines is a boutique, limited-production winemaker, focused on quality. Sustainably grown and hand-harvested, only the choicest grapes are used for Mizel Wines.

“Mizel’s dedicated team has control over the entire winemaking process, which allows us to consistently produce excellent wines,” says Michael Fowler.

Handcrafted Excellence

Mizel Estate Wines is a boutique, limited-production winemaker, focused on quality.  Sustainably grown and hand-harvested, only the highest-quality grapes are used for Mizel wines.

Mizel grows six French grape varieties on their estate: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah. Throughout the growing season, the vines are attentively nurtured to bring forth the premium characteristics of Mizel’s fruit. As harvest approaches, the grapes are carefully monitored to ensure that each variety is harvested at its peak.

The winemaking commences in Paso Robles, with Fabre managing crush and fermentation, carefully developing each grape variety’s unique flavor profile. Afterward, each varietal is aged in superlative French oak for 18 months.

“There is a little bit of an art and science to figuring out which types of oak and how old the barrels should be for each varietal. Guillaume is the expert, and he knows best,” shares Michael. When the aging is complete, the Fowlers meet with Fabre to taste wine from over 30 different barrels to decide which ones to blend. This passionate winemaking team combines their expertise and perspectives to skillfully blend Mizel Estate’s signature wines: First Impression Bordeaux Blend, Easy to Please Grenache and Smooth Touch Syrah. Each vintage is meticulously blended based on the characteristics of the fruit from the year’s harvest.

The results of the Mizel team’s efforts shine through in their opulent red wines. Mizel’s exquisite, nuanced red wines dazzle the palate with lingering flavors of fruit and spice.

Mizel’s Shangri-La

Upon entering the breathtaking Mizel Estate, you step into a world apart. As you walk through the manicured grounds along stone-bound paths surrounded by roses and vines, a sense of peace envelops you.

The Fowlers love to share the beauty of Mizel Estate with their guests.

“Our intention is to make our guests feel at home, whether they are here for a few hours or they are a beloved wine club member who’s invited to visit again and again,” says Zelene.

Every Saturday, guests can join an intimate gathering of fellow wine explorers for a refined wine tasting on Mizel’s private estate. Take a guided tour of the vineyard, then stop, sit and delight in the surroundings while enjoying a curated flight of Mizel’s divine, smooth red wines on the enchanting outdoor terrace.

Mizel’s engaging wine tastings are welcoming events that inspire lively discussion and bring about a spirit of camaraderie among the guests.

We have been fans of the premium wine from DAOU Vineyards in Paso Robles for many years. The family heritage, the spectacular setting and hospitality of their vineyards and tasting room and, most of all, their best of the best Paso Robles AVA Cabernet Sauvignon have always made DAOU very special. Our most recent Paso Robles visit was featured in our July 2026 “Explore” issue. That visit to DAOU Mountain included tastings of their Patrimony Reserve wines (all 100s on the “Chez Benny” wine score scale) and a meal worthy of three Michelin stars if they were a restaurant—it was a lifetime memory!

Of course, we said YES! When and where? We will be there! Hollywood? Okay, let’s plan a staycation at a nearby hotel to really enjoy ourselves and avoid Uber or driving.

Lucky us! Robin and I were then invited to attend their Soul of a City introduction to their 99-point rated 2023 Soul of a Lion, DAOU Vineyards flagship wine. The wine is spectacular: a Left Bank Bordeaux-style blend that’s 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot.

Held at TAO in Hollywood on April 23, the event featured curated tastings of the new vintage alongside rare library selections, with a special media tasting led by Senior Winemaker José Alberto Santos and wine expert Dev the Somm (Devin Reed). The dynamic celebration of wine and culture also included a welcome toast from DAOU Brand Ambassador Laura Reynolds, along with immersive elements such as a custom perfume bar and a live mural. TAO is almost more of an experience than a restaurant; it’s a great setting for a modern sultry film noir. I will let the photos tell the story.

DAOU 2023 Soul of a Lion is top, top shelf. We have a case stashed away for aging or a great steak dinner. Knowing me, I predict that it will be finished off well before it ages.

We provide support and help for cancer patients in San Fernando Valley, Ventura County and Santa Barbara County

Article by Monica Murrieta, Photos by supplied

For 35 years, Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara has stood alongside those in our community fighting cancer, as well as their families, friends and caregivers. Their mission is to uplift and strengthen people impacted by cancer by providing support, fostering compassionate communities and breaking down barriers to care.

“I found a place where I could learn how to reduce the natural stress and anxiety from several surgeries, a multitude of tests and a year of infusions. I found a place where there were others going through similar experiences, and from whom I could learn that I wasn’t alone, and that I could be a survivor,” said Pat Thomas, a 12-year breast cancer survivor, describing what she found at Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara over 10 years ago. During her first visit to her oncologist, the nurse handed her a brochure for Cancer Support Community, encouraging her to seek support.

Conversely, her husband Bill, a retired Navy combat carrier pilot felt, “I don’t need no stinking group.” Bill tells this story often and now laughs at his first thoughts about a support group. Yet, after attending the Cancer Support Community orientation with Pat, she suggested Bill consider the Caregivers group, led by co-founder Marty Nason. Bill remembers that the group members became close friends over the 10 years he attended, laughing, crying and supporting each other through their challenges and worries.

Together, they continue to grow hope.

On top of Pat’s diagnosis, the couple’s young granddaughter had just been diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a very rare cancer that develops in skeletal muscles. Their support groups became safe spaces where they could share their fears. Bill stated, “I needed a place where I could talk without worrying about upsetting Pat or our granddaughter and be able to work out my fears.”

Pat encourages others that may be hesitant to join a support group, “Just try it, for at least five visits. If it isn’t for you, that’s fine. If it IS for you, you will know quickly because you’ll feel stronger. Promise to give it a try and you will be glad you did!”

For women, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of death among women. Cancer Support Community offers a variety of breast cancer support groups: Newly Diagnosed, Advanced Breast Cancer and Life After Breast Cancer (all stages).

Joining a support group offers a powerful source of emotional support, understanding and empowerment for those facing this diagnosis. Whether someone is newly diagnosed, in early or advanced stages or adjusting to life after cancer, all programs are offered to anyone impacted by cancer. Through shared experiences and guided discussions, participants can reduce feelings of isolation, learn coping strategies and gain valuable insight into treatment options. Many also find renewed strength through active involvement in their recovery, stress‑reduction practices and access to community resources.

Cancer Support Community serves Ventura County, Santa Barbara County and the West San Fernando Valley, providing comprehensive, evidence‑based psychosocial support in English and Spanish. All services are FREE and include professionally-led support groups in English, Spanish and Japanese, individual counseling, social events, wellness classes and educational workshops. Cancer Support Community offers over 20 different support groups each month. Some groups are cancer-specific, but also offered are “all cancers” groups, as well as support groups for caregivers, our bereaved participants, survivors, family members and young adults.

Whether a participant is impacted by breast cancer or any other cancer, all of the support groups, wellness classes, educational workshops and support services are available to our community of cancer survivors, caregivers and family members. Together, group

Several fundraising events help to fund these services, including Hope Walk, Caravan for Cancer Car Show and Celebration of Hope Garden Party. To get involved or learn more about supportive care services, visit cancersupportvvsb.org/ or call 805.379.4777.

Southern California Reproductive Center

At Southern California Reproductive Center, we stand at the forefront of fertility care, blending modern science with personalized compassion. Our dedicated team of fertility experts are committed to guiding you through every step
of your unique fertility journey.

450 N Roxbury Drive, Suite 500, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Article by Tracy Marcynzsyn, Photography provided

For more than 25 years, Southern California Reproductive Center (SCRC) has been helping patients build families through advanced fertility care grounded in medical expertise, individualized treatment and a physician-led approach. Founded in 2000 by reproductive endocrinologists Dr. Mark Surrey and Dr. Hal Danzer, SCRC has grown from a single Beverly Hills practice into one of the most established fertility practices in the United States, now serving communities throughout Southern California.

In August 2026, SCRC reached another milestone with the opening of a new satellite location in Westlake Village. Located within CURE Medical at the Center for Health & Wellbeing at the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village, the new location brings SCRC’s reproductive care closer to patients in the Conejo Valley and surrounding communities.

The expansion reflects a simple idea that has remained central to SCRC since its founding: Fertility care should be both highly specialized and accessible to the people who need it.

“This is an exciting moment for our practice and for the patients we serve,” said Dr. Mark Surrey, Co-Founder of SCRC. “Expanding to Westlake Village reflects our ongoing commitment to making world-class fertility care more accessible across Southern California. We are proud to grow from a foundation of physician-led values that have guided this practice from the beginning.”

Bringing Care to the Conejo Valley

Fertility treatment often involves frequent appointments for bloodwork, ultrasounds and other monitoring. While advanced treatment may be concentrated at a specialized fertility center, the logistical demands of traveling back and forth can add another layer of stress to an already emotional process.

SCRC’s Westlake Village location is designed to address that challenge. It will serve as a central monitoring point for SCRC patients from Santa Barbara and Beverly Hills, allowing them to complete bloodwork and ultrasound monitoring closer to home during treatment cycles. New patients can also begin their care at the Westlake Village location, with consultations available either in person or virtually.

The new location is part of a broader Southern California network that includes SCRC offices in Beverly Hills, Santa Barbara, Pasadena and Ventura. Together, these locations allow patients to receive local monitoring while remaining connected to the same physician group and SCRC’s established laboratory and clinical infrastructure.

“We built this practice one patient at a time, and that approach has never changed,” said Dr. Hal Danzer, Co-Founder of SCRC. “Our Westlake Village location is a reflection of where we are headed, a physician-led practice continuing to grow in a way that puts patients first. We’re excited to bring our care closer to communities that have long needed it.”

The Westlake Village location is situated within CURE Medical at the Center for Health & Wellbeing at the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village, a setting focused on individualized medical and wellness experiences. SCRC’s presence there extends the practice’s physician-led reproductive care into one of the region’s premier wellness destinations.

A Personalized Approach to Fertility Treatment

Although technology has transformed reproductive medicine, SCRC believes that successful fertility care starts with understanding the individual patient.

“Fertility care is not one-size-fits-all, and it shouldn’t be treated that way,” is a principle that guides the practice. Two patients may have the same diagnosis on paper but require very different approaches based on their biology, medical history and personal goals.

SCRC’s physicians work with patients to develop individualized treatment plans and explain the reasoning behind those recommendations. The goal is for patients to understand their options and make informed decisions rather than simply follow a predetermined protocol.

That philosophy is reflected in the practice’s physician-owned structure. SCRC was founded by physicians and remains physician-owned today. Its medical team includes Dr. Mark Surrey, Dr. Hal Danzer, Dr. Carolyn Alexander, Dr. Susan Maxwell and Dr. Diana Chavkin, all reproductive medicine specialists committed to individualized patient care.

The physicians also hold clinical faculty appointments at UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, bringing academic and clinical experience to their work.

Comprehensive Reproductive Services Under One Practice

SCRC offers a broad range of fertility services designed to meet patients at different stages of their reproductive journeys. These include in vitro fertilization (IVF), intrauterine insemination (IUI), egg freezing and fertility preservation, donor egg treatment and other forms of third-party reproduction, including gestational surrogacy.

The practice also provides male fertility evaluation and treatment, diagnostic fertility testing, genetic testing and preimplantation genetic testing, as well as advanced reproductive and minimally invasive surgery.

For LGBTQ+ individuals and couples, SCRC offers family-building options including IVF, reciprocal IVF, donor gametes and surrogacy. The practice also works with single parents by choice and intended parents pursuing donor or gestational-carrier arrangements.

Patients may come to SCRC for many different reasons, including unexplained infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, tubal factor infertility, endometriosis, ovarian dysfunction, diminished ovarian reserve or male factor infertility. Others seek fertility preservation to maintain future options, including those facing medical treatments that may affect fertility.

Expertise Without the Distance

SCRC’s physicians say patients consistently value two things: the practice’s level of expertise and the personal nature of its care.

Patients are supported by care coordinators who understand their history, questions are answered in accessible language and the team strives to ensure that patients feel known rather than processed through a system.

That emphasis on continuity extends to SCRC’s Beverly Hills flagship location, which houses the practice’s own assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratory. Keeping embryology and patient care under the same roof allows the clinical and laboratory teams to communicate directly about each case.

The laboratory, combined with SCRC’s depth of experience in reproductive medicine, provides an important foundation for the practice’s IVF and related services. SCRC’s physicians have practiced through decades of advances in reproductive medicine while continuing to invest in new technologies and treatment approaches.

Looking Ahead

As SCRC enters its next chapter, the Westlake Village expansion represents both growth and a continuation of the practice’s original mission.

The goal is not simply to add another location, but to make specialized fertility care more accessible while preserving the physician-led, individualized approach that has defined SCRC since 2000.

For patients throughout the Conejo Valley, Santa Barbara, Ventura and greater Southern California, the new Westlake Village location offers another point of access to a fertility practice with more than two decades of experience.

At its core, SCRC’s message remains straightforward: Every patient deserves the opportunity to understand their fertility options and pursue the path to family building that is right for them.

Nectar of the Dogs

Article and photography provided

Nectar of the Dogs Wine (NOTDW) is more than a tasting room; it’s a destination built around the simple idea that great wine is better when it’s shared, and that every bottle can help make a difference.

With handcrafted California wines, a lively calendar of events and a mission to support dog rescue, NOTDW has created a space in Simi Valley where guests can sip, socialize and celebrate while giving back to a cause close to the brand’s heart.

More Than a Tasting Room

Nectar of the Dogs Wine was born from a passion for wine and a commitment to helping dogs in need. The company’s mission goes beyond producing quality wine; a portion of bottle sales supports local nonprofit rescue Outta the Cage, in addition to other local rescues.

That spirit of giving is part of what makes the brand unique. The dog-inspired identity is playful and welcoming, but the mission behind it is meaningful: bring people together, create memorable experiences and use the business as a vehicle to give back.

“At its core and since the beginning, Nectar of the Dogs Wine was inspired by the love of the rescue dogs that changed our lives, and our love of wine,” said Founder Melanie Garibay.

Giving back is only part of the story. Garibay also envisioned NOTDW as a place where people could gather and feel at home. Since opening its tasting room in 2023, the response from the local community has helped fuel the company’s growth.

“Opening the tasting room was a labor of love, and the overwhelming support from the community has made it all worth the hard work and effort,” says Garibay.

That sense of welcome is evident in the dog-friendly tasting room’s personality. Dog lovers, wine enthusiasts, music fans and neighbors can all find a reason to stop by and stay awhile.

Crafted to be Shared

At the heart of Nectar of the Dogs Wine is small-production, handcrafted wine.

The brand’s portfolio showcases a diverse collection of wines, from crisp, refreshing whites and rosés to rich reds and distinctive blends. Vineyard sources span some of California’s celebrated growing regions, including Napa Valley, Atlas Peak, Paso Robles and Lodi, allowing the winemaking team to explore different varietals, styles and expressions while maintaining a commitment to quality.

Guests can experience the wines through tasting flights, glasses or bottles, making the tasting room an easy place to discover something new whether you’re a longtime wine enthusiast or simply looking for a fun place to spend an afternoon or evening.

Sip, Stay & Celebrate

If wine is at the heart of Nectar of the Dogs Wine, community is its soul.

The Simi Valley tasting room has become a gathering place for live music, special events and experiences designed to bring people through the doors and give them a reason to stay awhile. The calendar features live performances, themed nights, trivia, wine releases and other events that turn a traditional tasting room visit into something much more social.

NOTDW provides an expansive industrial-style space that makes an ideal setting for private events. The nearly 3,000-square-foot venue can be transformed to accommodate a wide range of occasions, including milestone celebrations, rehearsal gatherings, fundraisers, holiday parties and corporate events. From intimate gatherings to larger celebrations, each event is uniquely tailored to meet the guest’s creative vision.

The staff’s extensive experience in event production brings a level of expertise that helps make planning and execution seamless from start to finish. Plus, the venue’s comprehensive production package includes professional audio, video and lighting, providing everything needed to elevate events featuring live music, presentations, performances and other entertainment.

Ultimately, NOTDW is about bringing people together, with a great glass of wine in hand and a good cause at heart.

Whether you stop in for a tasting, come out to hear a local band, gather friends for a celebration or book the space for your next event, the experience is designed to be shared.

Because at Nectar of the Dogs Wine, every gathering has the potential to become something more: a great memory, a stronger community and, with every bottle, a little more help for dogs in need.

Have you ever wondered if it’s time to create a wine cellar in your home? How many bottles of wine do you have? How many cases? How many wine racks or refrigerators are currently storing your collection? Perhaps you have a growing wine collection you’d love to display in your home or business.

These are some of the questions Scott Berry, owner of Cellar Masters, hears every day from homeowners and wine collectors.

Getting Started with Cellar Masters

So, how do you get started? Reach out to Berry, and he will meet you at your home or business to help you choose the best wine feature for your needs.

“We love visiting homeowners, listening, designing and creating their custom wine cellars every step of the way,” says Berry. “We understand that tastes are unique for each project, so their wine cellar is personalized to suit their needs. You dream it, and Cellar Masters will create it!”

Cellar Masters also specializes in creating impressive wine features for restaurants. These installations showcase exceptional wine collections in glass-enclosed, climate-controlled environments, allowing diners to admire the collections as they enter or move through the restaurant.

“We recently created a 630-bottle wine feature for Old Oak Steakhouse in Thousand Oaks. It’s always nice to see our work in the wild,” says Berry.

Wine Storage Designed Around You

Cellar Masters offers a wide range of solutions for homes and businesses, including wine walls, under-stair installations, contemporary designs and traditional wine cellars. The company has been designing, building and serving cellars since 1990.

“Wine features can start with a small collection or larger,” says Berry. “Some wine walls are for display and at room temperature, and for temperature-controlled environments in your living room or dining room, we have been very creative in building them for our clients.”

The possibilities are almost endless. A wine feature can be designed to store cases, large format and individual bottles while providing convenient label views and dedicated space for wine keys, decanters and other accessories. Cellar Masters showcases examples of its work on its website, CellarMasters.com, and at its Newbury Park location, where clients can view select installations in person by appointment.

Finding Space in Unexpected Places

“You just never know where you can place your collection,” says Berry.

That creativity is at the heart of what Cellar Masters does. The company has assembled an experienced team to design, build and install custom wine cellars and wine storage solutions for homes and businesses.

Cellar Masters has built more than 2,500 custom wine cellars throughout the region and across California.

Whether your collection consists of a few special bottles or hundreds of cases, Cellar Masters can create a space that is both functional and beautiful, designed specifically around your collection, your home and your lifestyle.

Protect Your Wine Collection

For winemakers, collectors and restaurateurs who may not yet have the space—or who simply need additional storage—Cellar Masters offers a variety of climate-controlled storage options at its facility. Storage begins with an 18-case base locker, making it an ideal solution for growing collections while providing an opportunity to become part of the Cellar Masters wine community. Custom wine lockers and concierge services are also available, including assistance with receiving and managing wine club deliveries.
